Fraud Advisory Panel: the Business Fraud Alliance website

The Business Fraud Alliance campaign website shown on a laptop

The Fraud Advisory Panel asked us to design and build the website for the Business Fraud Alliance, a UK-wide campaign against business fraud. We had worked with the Panel, the UK counter-fraud charity, before: we designed the identity for its Fraud Matters podcast. The Alliance needed a home online — a site that could carry everything from plain breakdowns of fraud methods to risk assessment tools — and we designed and built it: businessfraudalliance.com.

The challenge

The Business Fraud Alliance is led by the Fraud Advisory Panel and supported by Barclays. In its own words, it exists ‘to empower businesses of all sizes to take a stand against fraud’ ‘through education, collaboration, and accessible resources’, and it aims ‘to make fraud prevention part of everyday business practice’. It brings together businesses, professional bodies and advisers to share knowledge, raise awareness and provide practical tools for fraud prevention and detection. Partners include ACCA, Cifas and Barclays alongside the Panel itself and specialised law firms, and a research strand gathers input from businesses through a survey run with Perpetuity Research.

That breadth was the design problem. The site had to hold a lot of very different material — fraud explainers, expert analysis, events, a monthly podcast, helpsheets, checklists and assessment tools — and our job was to organise it so a business could find the parts that applied to it. It also had to sit inside a visual world that already existed. We had designed the Fraud Matters identity to be legible at thumbnail size, with episode graphics and social assets carrying one identity, and the campaign site needed to belong to that world rather than compete with it.

What we did

We designed and built the campaign’s website. It is not a brochure site; it is a working toolkit, organised by business type:

  • A Types of Fraud section: breakdowns of common fraud methods
  • Trends & Insights: a home for expert analysis
  • An Events section for the campaign
  • The Fraud Matters podcast: monthly episodes hosted by Guy Ruddle, bringing together legal experts, investigators and practitioners
  • A Resource Centre of helpsheets and checklists, organised by business type — supply-chain, services and project-based organisations
  • Fraud risk assessment tools for different business models

The result

The campaign says it plainly: ‘Protecting Business. Preventing Fraud.’ The website is where that becomes usable — the place where a business of any size can learn how common frauds work, read expert analysis, listen to practitioners talk it through, and leave with a checklist or a risk assessment it can act on, whether it runs a supply chain, sells services or works project by project.

It is also the kind of job an established relationship makes easier. The podcast on the site is the same Fraud Matters series whose identity we designed, so the campaign site could extend that identity rather than start again — one visual world across the site and the series.
