Halloween - or Samhain - is the second biggest festival in the Western world. It marks the turning of the Celtic Year and originated at Tlachtga (the Hill of Ward) just outside Athboy, Co. Meath. All fires in the country would be put out until the New Year fire would be lit on the hill of Tlachtga. Torches were lit from this fire and carried to seven other hills around the county, including Tara and Loughcrew, and then on to light up the whole countryside.
